crucial information about email marketing.
Of all the ways to get website traffic and make money
online, nothing tops email marketing. Of course, email
marketing in itself means many things to many marketers.
After all, it can take on quite a wide variety of
formats.

Today I'll cover the various forms of email marketing
available to online businesses and reveal what works and
what doesn't. Here's what we'll discuss...

1. Unsolicited bulk email marketing
2. Opt-in email list rental
3. Email newsletter classified and sponsorship advertising
4. Email newsletter solo mailings (text and html)
5. Email newsletter network advertising
6. Opt-in "series" email marketing

1. Unsolicited bulk email marketing

Let's jump right into that dangerous endeavor referred to
as UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email) or spam. Most of
you know my take on this. Sure, you can get some website
traffic using bulk email. (Though a response rate close
to the 10% rate some companies promise is not likely -
.01% is more likely.) You can tackle the rigors of
unsolicited bulk email marketing yourself (you'll need
lots of ISP connections because they'll be canceled
quickly!) or hire a company to do the dirty work for you.

But the fact is, since unsolicited bulk email angers a huge
percentage of recipients, your risks can be rather high.
Your domain will end up being blocked by many ISPs and you
could even face some legal battles. In my humble opinion,
unsolicited bulk email is not worth the trouble. Read on and
you'll find that bulk email marketing isn't really necessary
either.

2. Opt-in email list rental

A much "cleaner" version of bulk email marketing is "opt-in
email list rental." There are plenty of companies on the web
that will rent you email addresses that have opted in to
receive commercial email. Actually, in most cases they are
not really renting the addresses; that is, you never see the
addresses. Instead, they charge you a per email address fee
for mailing your message to a list under their management.
But does it work...?

As long the recipients are not being paid to read the
messages and they are genuinely interested in the offers
they signed up to receive, this strategy can be profitable.
The problem is that in most cases you'll pay from ten to
twenty cents per address and mailing to a list large enough
to get great results can get quite expensive. But if your
budget can handle it, you can generate some great targeted
traffic. I've tried a few list rentals myself, though not
recently. The best was from the site postmasterdirect.com
which has millions of addresses in a huge variety of
categories under management.

3. Email newsletter classified and sponsorship advertising

Now let's jump to a more reasonably priced email marketing
solution... "email newsletter classified and sponsorship
advertising". In my opinion this one still gives the best
bang for the buck, especially for small businesses with
modest advertising budgets.

Some people think I recommend ezine advertising because I
have an ezine and I'm trying to sell my own ad space. On
the contrary, I've been trying NOT to sell my ad space for
the last few years. That's why my own rates are fairly
high! I can run my own offers or affiliate offers and make
much more than I can selling the ad space. Many other ezine
editors are finding the same thing. While this has resulted

the ezines yourself. Although this requires a larger
initial investment than running ads in individual ezines,

clicking on a link in the email. Bounces are messages that
are undeliverable to the recipient. They could be “soft bounces”
due to temporary issues such as a full mailbox or “hard bounces”
from an invalid email account, but for our purposes here it means
people on your list who did not receive your message”. And last,
opt-out requests are recipients who request to no longer receive
email.

There are a wide range of results that can be measured for email
campaigns, such as:

- How accurate is the list (how many bounces out of total
sent)
- How active is the list (how many opens out of total sent)
- How positive was the reaction to the offer itself (number of
click-throughs out of total opens)
- How negative was the reaction to the offer itself (number of
opt-outs out of total opens)

The actual number of responses on any particular campaign can
vary quite a bit. A newsletter whose primary job is to inform will not
achieve the same click-through rate as a promotion, which is intended
to get a specific response. The differing levels of permission within
your list of recipients will also affect results. Until a list has been
"cleaned" of bad addresses and those who are not interested, you may
see far different data. Pruning these from your lists will help you
improve your results considerably.

In order to account for these wide variations in factors, I suggest some
general "baseline" ratios that should be achieved on any particular
mailing. There should be more opens than bounces, or else the list is
probably out of date. Also, there should be more click-throughs than
opt-outs, otherwise the offer is poorly targeted or the list is of
questionable origin.

In order to get the optimum response you will need to send two
or three multiples of your email marketing campaign, each time using
a variation of the original offer. If they haven't responded by 3
attempts, it’s time to change your approach.

The typical response pattern is that mailings 1 and 2 will have a
similar response, with number 2 often having slightly fewer clickthroughs
than number 1. Number 3 picks up the stragglers and
undecided recipients, so the response will be much lower, but usually
significant enough to justify the mailing. Please note that you shouldn’t
necessarily just blast out three mailings one after another. For
example, you might piggyback your first offer onto a monthly
newsletter, send the second offer separately as a special promotional
mailing two weeks later, then finish the series with the final offer in
the next month’s newsletter.

It is useful to understand how the size of your lists is changing
over time. By viewing how many people sign up for your lists each
day, you can attempt to correlate list growth with other marketing
activities that you may be conducting. It is also important to consider
how many people are signing up for your lists versus how many are
opting out of them. If your lists have been cleaned, and the overall list
size is still shrinking, you need to reevaluate both your list acquisition
strategy and the content relevancy of your mailings.

Testing is critical to optimizing your email marketing campaigns. But in
order to test, you have to measure first. Make sure you have a way to
collect detailed information about your mailings, preferably in an
automatic way. Careful analysis of the actual metrics will give you the

In today's world, it seems that almost any topic is open for
debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was
quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were
settled are actually still being openly discussed.

You can see that there's practical value in learning more about list.

Email marketing is a powerful yet inexpensive way to make
contact with customers and prospects.

Depending on whom you are trying to touch, there may be certain
times of day, or days of the week, when the recipient may be
more responsive to your message. In addition to specific
timing for your email marketing campaigns, the frequency
and the number of times to send can all play a big role in
helping to improve your results.

When to Email?
For a mailing to business recipients, sending midday from 11 AM
through 3 PM is generally the best time. Sending a message earlier in
the day can result in a higher risk of the message getting lost in the
rush to prepare for morning meetings. Send it too late in the day and
it may end up quickly deleted before the recipient leaves for their
commute home.

On the other hand, when mailing to consumers, 5 PM through 8
PM is the best time. People tend to check their personal email when
they get home from work or after dinner. Most consumers are too
busy getting ready for work in the morning to read their email.
Like the time of the day, different days of the week can affect
your results as well. The best days to contact businesses are weekdays
except for Monday and Friday. Monday has proven to have too many
meetings to reach decision makers, and on Friday, most people would
prefer to leave early before the rush hour than receive your email, no
matter how exciting the email and offer may be.

Consumers are more likely to spend more time on the Internet on
weekends, and hence have more time to consider your offer. One
observation is that since many people tend to check their personal
email at various points throughout the day, selecting a specific time to
hit your target group while they are online is much more difficult.
Avoid Mailing During Holidays

During the holidays, people tend to be away from their computers
and don’t check their email regularly. This means they may get your
message when they return together with a ton of other mail that has
piled up during the holidays. Chances are all but the most important
messages will be deleted in a rush without a second look.

Frequency of the Email

Sending email too often can be annoying, resulting in recipients
asking to be removed. Don't send often enough and you may be
forgotten when the recipient is finally ready to buy. Generally, once
every 2-3 weeks is best. A few exceptions are a daily newspaper or a
time-dependant offer like a seminar invitation.

Sending three variations of the same offer to the same recipient is
a good way to improve response rates. You should never send the
exact same offer more than once. Otherwise you risk the recipient
thinking that it’s just another copy of the same email and deleting it. If
a recipient has not responded by the third attempt, they are not going
to respond at all, either because it’s the right offer/wrong time, or the
wrong offer altogether.

Following-Up

It is important to follow up at least once after an initial offer.
Many times it has been observed that a number of recipients will
clickthrough on the first mailing only after receiving a second mailing.
You cannot wait too long to send a follow-up message or they may have
forgotten about the original offer. Follow-up contact is recommended
1-2 weeks after the original offer is sent.

you can create a positive tie-in. When using this kind of
personalization, you must make sure that the relevancy will be obvious
for the recipient. This works particularly well for sending partner
offers, but again only as long as the offer tightly matches the needs of
the target group, and will be perceived as relevant.
The more reliance your email marketing campaign has on your
database, the more important that it is to have the correct data. Errors
in your data can lead to your mailing showing how poorly you know
the recipient, not how well.

Always have default information to substitute in case you are
missing data. You can write your copy so that substituting this default
text maintains the flow of the narrative. For example, let's say you
plan on merging the "Company Name" from your database into your
email. Using default text of "your company" works well as in "We know
that XYZ Corp. can benefit from our services" or "We know that your
company can benefit from our services".

Lastly, always respect the privacy of the recipient and avoid all
sensitive information. Anything that might make the recipient
uncomfortable such as financial status or health status are best left off
limits when it comes to email personalization.
In conclusion, leverage the full power of your database to
personalize email content to individual names, histories, likes and
dislikes. In the world of direct email marketing, one size does not fit
all, so use available tools to make your email as personal and as
relevant to each person as possible.

If you look at the overall behavior of all of your website visitors,
you'll be inundated with a ton of information. Trying to distinguish and
identify patterns among such a large group is extremely difficult, if not

Building your mailing list of hungry prospects can be
one of the best investments you will ever make, as it
is time and effort worth spending on.

Once you begin building your list, you will begin making sales

This is every email marketer’s dilemma. More so, due to the
fact that there is no clear majority of people preferring
one format over the other. Some people will always prefer
text to graphics, and some email readers only support basic
text. A prominent Internet marketing website recently carried
out a survey asking not only which format was preferred but
why one format was preferred over another. Over 600 people,
mostly marketers and small business operators, responded.55%
favored HTML and 45% preferred text. Given that well over
90% of email readers can view HTML, it is surprising that
almost half the people would prefer to receive text. To
investigate this point further, the survey gave those who
chose text a list of possible reasons to explain why. On
average, people listed about two and a half reasons each.
They said:

- Can't read HTML 6%
- Just want the meat without the distractions 32%
- Like to read offline 15%
- Ads are more intrusive in HTML 22%
- Slow to download 14%
- Other 11%

The most popular reason for choosing plain text over HTML
was an interesting one. People were clearly expressing a
desire for email layouts that focused on the message, and
they often saw HTML emails as containing elements that
distract from the content — the content being the reason
they signed up for the email in the first place. 11% of
the people who selected “Other” as their reason gave their
own reasons as:

- Text takes up less storage space 28%
- Security — fear of viruses 22%
- Easier/faster to read/scan 13%
- Text is easier to read on a PDA 9%
- Text is more reliable, formatting/forwarding etc. 7%
- Easier to save/file/copy text 6%
- Like to read email in preview pane 4%
- Fear of tracking/being spied on with HTML 4%
- Text is more easily searched offline 1%

The fact still remains that readers are almost equally
divided on their preference. The best way to get around
this is to give your subscribers an option of receiving
messages in text or HTML.

list”. It’s true that you can make a lot of money by building a

1.Collect Only Relevant Information

historically low levels, primarily due to the high volume of messages in

acquisition are typically lower than those for retention-based email,
renting lists to win over prospects and grow a customer base can work
wonders, if you do your homework.

Here are some guidelines that can help in buying or renting lists

Email is still the most popular and most used communication
medium on the Internet. It’s also an efficient way to distribute your
message to large numbers of people who have requested that
information. As a form of marketing, it generates high response rates
and gives you measurable results with instant feedback.

Just keep in mind, it is never acceptable to send commercial email
to people who haven’t requested to receive email from you. Bust that
rule, and there’s a good chance you’ll be out of business. That gives
you the challenge of building up a list of willing subscribers.

When you’re first starting out, there’s often a temptation to
simply purchase an opt-in email list. Lots of people sell them and you
can easily pick up a million or so addresses for just a few bucks. But
while that may appear to be a fast, easy way to build up customers,

opt-in contacts at all. To say it bluntly, emailing people from a list like
that is called spamming.

more effective, to take the time to build your own real opt-in list.

Marketing by email can attract new customers, keep existing
ones, up-sell, cross-sell, and cut costs. E-merchant Wine.com, for
example, found email campaigns drove twice as many "best prospects"
to their site compared to banner ads or other Internet marketing
activities.

If executed improperly though, email campaigns can backfire with
disastrous business consequences. How to minimize the risk and
maximize the return? Part of the answer is a common sense approach
called "permission" or "opt-in" marketing, in which customers or
prospects volunteer to receive email.

The odds of users joining a list can be improved by providing
three opt-in opportunities, all with low entry barriers. First, there
should be minimal sign-up work. Many sites require only an email
address; all other personal information is optional. Second, there
should be several sign-up opportunities on a site, including on the
inquiry, order, and feedback forms. These forms may use a checkbox
asking prospects if they would like to receive occasional special
offers/newsletters by email. If so, it must be placed conspicuously on
the form. Third, a privacy policy that addresses what will be done with
user information should be posted in an obvious place.

Continuing on the lines of “opt-in” marketing, one of the most
successful methods is the double opt-in technique. In double opt-in a
user elects to receive email newsletters or standalone commercial
messages. A confirmation email is sent to that user, who is now
required to take one more action to be included on the list. The person
must click the link within the confirmation email to affirm their intent
to join your mailing list.

Although, the double opt-in techniques runs the risk of losing
subscribers during the confirmation process, it gives the subscribers
more control and thus, has proven to be more successful. That said,
here are some measures emailers who practice double opt-in can take
to reduce confirmation drop-offs.

When a user enters his address, mention an email will be sent to
him and include its estimated arrival time. Indicate the user is required
to respond to that message to receive subsequent mailings. With
transactional customers, consider placing this information on the page
with order confirmation.

Ideally, a confirmation message is sent immediately. It should be
sent while the subscription is fresh in subscribers' minds and they're
still engaged in an online session. If you indicate it will be within a day
or two, make sure you follow through on that promise. If your systems
are slower, then requirements related to message content are even
more relevant.

If you need a confirmation, that's the only thing you should ask
for. Explain to users they will not be added to the list until they take
the necessary action. Most desirable is a one-click confirmation link
embedded in the message. Giving users a reply option with subject
line intact is another good approach. Requiring them to write
something in the subject line or body of the message or asking them
to forward the email on to another address is not nearly as effective.
Ensure that your contact information is included in the confirmation
message and, if possible, include a link to your privacy policy.

quadruple what you are earning in one year”. This

You may also use breaking news as your subject to
intrigue your subscriber. For example, if you deal
with car engine parts you can write in your subject,
“Announcing the new engine that uses no gasoline,
It runs on water”. This creates curiosity with the
reader and will lead them to open the mail and

Here is to find a step-by-step guide to getting your
newsletter or ezine set-up.

1 Create Your Free Report

You’re going to need a digital product of some form.
It can be an eBook, which is the best by far, or it
can be another type of free report. Either way, they need
to be full of real, useful information. You don’t want to
just send something to your people that is really vague and not
helpful. It’s all about providing them with a good, free
gift that is helpful to them. This will keep them coming
back for more. You will also be using this as something
to get people to sign up on your list for, so it needs
to be good. The more people you are getting to sign up,
the more money you will be able to make.

A free report can either be sent as a Word document or
a PDF document. These are two file types that most
people are easily able to open. If you are giving away
some sort of software trial, then it will be a program
in an .exe format.

Creating a free report is simple. All you have to do
is begin typing. You will want an eBook to be laid out
in a similar form as a traditional book. You will
also want to have a cover page,preferably with a graphic.

2 Get an Autoresponder

An autoresponder is a program that sends out pre-written
Email messages to your subscribers.You write out your
ezine issues in advance and store them in your
autoresponder system. You can then set them up to
send out at certain time intervals.For example, you
subscriber will receive the first email, which is
normally a confirmation email that they signed up.
The second and third emails are sent out by the system

They can either:

- Not buy the product, but sign up for your newsletter

These two options should be available at the bottom

4 Thank You Page

This is the last page that your buyer or subscriber will
see. This is where you will want to refer your readers
on to your other products as well as thank them for
signing up or purchasing your products.

5 Your Ezine or Newsletter

The first thing you want to do is write a couple of
letters that will allow your subscribers to get to know
you. You want to tell them who you are and what type of
information you plan on providing them. You also want
to let them know why they should stay on your list.

You will need to create another series of emails that
will be loaded into the autoresponder. It is very important
that you are always building your credibility in your
emails. You want to establish your credibility from
day one and you will want to do everything that you can
to keep your customer’s attention. You should always have
personable and conversational emails and really write from
your own perspective. You also always want to write as
if you are talking directly to your readers.

6 Ezine Theme

Before you start writing you are going to want to
determine a theme for your ezine. This is important
because you want your ezine to be focused. You want
to keep it consistent so that you readers will easily
be able to recognize you when they receive your emails.
With a focused ezine you are also able to offer and promote
products that are targeted to your readers.

7 Writing Your Content

Each issue of your ezine should provide some sort of
good and valuable information. You also want them to be
written with a lot of personality, especially since there
are so many ezines out there that have stiff and boring
8messages going out.

8 What All Should You Include In Your Ezine?

Once you are sending your ezine out pretty regularly
you will want to begin adding in your affiliates or
your other offers. Here are a few ideas to help you

After you have set up a list, you need to begin narrowing
it down to targeted visitors.

It is best if you can get these targeted subscribers
right off the bat, that way you don’t have a list of
20,000 and only about 1,500 who are really interested.
In order to do this you need to drive those targeted
people to your sales page and talk them into signing up.
There are several ways that you can attract your
target market, including:

1 Advertisement Swapping

This involves finding other ezines that are in your
niche and then offer to swap advertising space with
them. This is a win-win situation and its great if
you already have some subscribers.

2 Barter with Other Ezines

If you are just starting out and you don’t have any
subscribers yet, then you can always barter for
advertising space. Offer the other ezine owner a free
product in exchange for advertisement space. You can also
make them an affiliate and give them a commission on
sales of your product in exchange for advertising space.

3 Give Away Ventures

Here you will sign up for a Joint Venture account with a
Give Away website. After registering, you upload a free gift,
such as a free report or eBook, to the website and provide
a description as well as how subscribers can receive the
free gift.

With a Give Away venture a bunch of Internet marketers
have free gifts available on the website. Each marketer
also endorses the Give Away campaign to their subscribers.
These are usually free to join and can easily send you
thousands of leads.

4 Blogging

Blogs are great because the search engines absolutely
love them! They index blogs constantly and this provides
you with a great chance at getting a great spot on the
search engines for a variety of keywords. They are also
free through WordPress.com or Blogger.com. They allow you

They are also great because you can strategically place
your form throughout the blog, whether it is just on a page

These are leads that you purchase through a company.

2.Good Leads
These are leads those that you can get through Free Ad Programs,
Co-Opt Programs and Giveaway sites. These are better than those

How To Make Money From Passions

To make money online many people jump right in before they are properly prepared. You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher there are prerequisites, things you must learn, before you can be successful, you don't just jump right in unprepared.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who'd have you believe it's a "Walk in the Park" and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I'll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, "what comes first the chicken or the egg"? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion - I have no clue and I don't think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you've researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I'm concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I'm not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join - but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won't attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won't stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don't find it move on,
You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent so I guess I'll start that business - does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet "guru" does that, don't be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it's your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don't first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

Remember, these are people you've found on the world's largest marketplace, which means they're enthusiastic online shoppers! They're exactly the kind of people you want to introduce your products to.

A. Hey no problem. Good to be

Q. We all know that traffic is important
but could you just explain a bit about traffic for the beginners out
there?

A. Sure. Traffic is the lifeblood of any
business online. Without it you just die. We all know that. But what a
lot of us don't realize is that just like everything else on the
Internet traffic changes very quickly. That is, the methods of getting
traffic are changing all the time and that's where people get caught
out.

Q. What do you mean by "caught
out"?

A. Well people fall into the trap of
thinking that just because they know one or two traffic generation
methods that they are some sort of traffic master. In reality just
because you know how to start a pay per click campaign or a little bit
about search engines doesn't make you anywhere near a traffic expert.
I'm trying to spread the word that there is a massive array of traffic
tactics that most people aren't even aware of, let alone using or
mastering.

Q. Can you give us some
examples?

A. Sure. Offline for example. You might
immediately think that getting traffic is a purely online activity but
the truth of the matter is that there are lots of things you can be
doing offline to get people into your website. And it's usually these
sorts of areas that are being under-utilized and therefore there is
less competition for that traffic as well.

Q. So by offline you mean advertising
offline?

A. Not necessarily. That is one method,
yes, but I'm thinking of more creative ways to get people into your
website. It all comes down to the fact that having asked people on my
list it came as no surprise that most people want to know about free
rather than paid traffic sources. I've had to become an expert in free
ways of getting traffic in my time online.

Q. What do you mean - I thought you were
running a successful online business with lots of cash
flow?

A. I am. But it's not always been this
way. When I first started out in 1995 I had nothing. No money to play
with. Just my own initiative and imagination.

Q. So are you saying you're against paying
for traffic online?

A. No. No I'm not saying that at all. What
I'm saying is that, especially when you first start out, you always
want to focus on the free methods. You get the traffic in for free,
make some sales and then you can reinvest some of that money into paid
methods of getting traffic. This speeds up the
process.

Q. So what particular offline methods are
you referring to - can you give us some examples?

A. There's one tactic I used that costs
nothing to implement, is relatively quick and ended up getting me
thousands and thousands of targeted visitors into my websites.
When I've shared this tactic with other marketers at seminars they've
started laughing and slapping their foreheads when they saw how easy it
was. They were also embarrassed that they had failed to use this
tactic. It was quite amusing.

Q. So are you going to tell us what this
method is?

A. No! (laughs) It's in my course! I truly
believe in rewarding those people that are most eager to learn so
instead of giving away all my traffic tactics in interviews like this
I've put some of them in an E-Book I've written. It is free though if
